The Life and Character of the Late Reverend, Learned, and Pious Mr. Jonathan Edwards together with Extracts from his Private Writings & Diary by Samuel Hopkins
Appendices by Esther Burr the daughter of Mr. Edwards
The Life and Character of the Late Reverend, Learned, and Pious Mr. Jonathan Edwards was the first book dealing with the life of Edwards. The uniqueness of this volume is as follows: it was produced at the request of Mrs. Jonathan Edwards; it was edited, collected and written by Samuel Hopkins, who was Edwards’ literary executor; it was the only biography written by eyewitness; it was the work of one of Edwards’ most gifted students; and it was the labor of one who knew Edwards better than anyone outside of his family. Hopkins in his formative years lived in Edwards’ home and studied theology under his direct tutelage. This plus a life time of friendship made Samuel Hopkins the ideal penman for such a task.
